AMA rebuts Medicare rort claim
Claims that widespread misuse of Medicare is costing billions of dollars a year are exaggerated, says the Australian Medical Association.
Doctors are not rorting Medicare through overservicing patients, says association president Dr Steve Hambleton, but adds that the "few" people misusing the system should be weeded out.

The report by Dr Tony Webber is particularly critical of financial incentives for doctors who refer chronically ill patients to allied health practitioners.
Dr Webber is a former director of the Professional Services Review set up to ensure Medicare payments are made appropriately,
Dr Hambleton said he believed the figures were "very much exaggerated".
"If there are a few individuals misusing the system . we need to weed (them) out. Obviously, Dr Webber has seen a few of those," he told ABC radio.
Overall, he believed current GP management plans were working well in assisting people with chronic illnesses.
"We can't judge the whole profession on a very small few. I think there are people everywhere doing the right thing," he said.
Under changes to the Medicare system from 2005, doctors have been able to develop management plans that refer patients to the health services they require.
Parliamentary secretary for health Catherine King said the doctors rorting the system are in the minority.
"Medicare is a very significant part, in fact it's the major part of our health system in Australia, and it's only been a very small number of the thousands and thousands of health professionals who are part of that Medicare system whose cases have been referred to the Professional Review Panel," she told reporters in Melbourne.
