Bredesen Names New Revenue Commissioner
Gov. Phil Bredesen named a Nashville tax attorney as state Revenue commissioner for the remainder of his administration Monday and said hopes the next governor will consider keeping him on the job.
Bredesen also said he has urged both Democrat Mike McWherter and Republican Bill Haslam, the leading candidates to succeed him, to consider keeping some other highranking officials in place for the new administration.
Charles Trost, who has been with the Nashville law firm of Waller Lansden Dortch Davis, was appointed by Bredesen to succeed Reagan Farr, who resigned as revenue commissioner on Sept. 1.
The governor said he considers leadership of the Department of Revenue as basically nonpolitical and that "Charlie is somebody who might well be considered by the next governor who comes in" for continuing in the position.
Bredesen said he had asked Trost his political affiliation shortly before administering the oath of office on Monday and the answer was "probably Republican."
Trost has for ten years been recognized as an expert in state tax law, Bredesen said, "now you're going to have to live with all those things you did" in helping clients avoid taxes.
Bredesen said he also believes that the head of the state's Department of Military is a nonpartisan position and the next governor should consider keeping Adjutant General Terry M. "Max" Haston in that job. When he took office, Bredesen noted, he kept General Gus Hargett, who was appointed by his Republican predecessor, in that position.
