I’ve read,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], heard presentations on, and listened to many people share models for the most empowering ways to write out their personal mission statements. The beauty of it is that I’ve heard so many different approaches that I can truthfully proclaim that there is no right or wrong way to develop one. I’ve heard of elaborate stories of spiritual counselors walking their clients through guided visualizations to surface their inner most values,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and simple suggestions like get a pen and paper and ‘just do it’. Some feel this should be something done alone such that their ideas are not tainted by others, while some feel that having others support them in pointing out personal qualities might be a good kickstart to get the creative process flowing. So my message to you is that you should find the method for writing it that feels right and is most inspiring to you (that’s who it is for after all).

Firstly, I am not lying when I say it takes 15 minutes - the values that will be expressed on your mission statement are already within you and when you think about what is truly important to you, it will flow very quickly. Some people like to make it pretty, frame it etc which I admit will take more time. But fundamentally all you need is a pen and piece of paper and you are ready to go.
Most everyone is familiar with a mission statement developed for a business. Typically, these are short paragraphs proclaiming the guiding principles of the company, which are prominently displayed in the hallway as you walk into the corporate headquarters. The mission statement,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], commonly tied in with a values statement, proclaims the purpose of the company dictated straight from heart and soul of its founding fathers. This short paragraph explains corporate core values and gives a greater sense of ‘why’ the business is in the business that they are in - and no, you won’t find many mission statements read that their purpose is to make money! While money might be a short term motivator for employees,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that guiding principle alone will not inspire long term and sustainable value for a consumer who will undoubtedly perpetuate the business over time.

What is a Personal Mission Statement?
About a decade ago I was working with a small environmental software company and there was no prominently displayed mission statement for everyone to see. I recall that during a very busy and challenging time in which we were putting out a lot of fires, I asked our president and founder about our corporate mission. I was so frustrated with all the tasks that I lost the meaning behind what I was doing. Were my current activities even aligned with our core principles? Reviewing the corporate mission was a good values check in, it was a way for me to ground myself and to reframe the work that I was doing. This too can be the significance of a personal mission statement.

Thirdly, its a fantastic barometer for your current situation. It provides an awesome personal test to see if today’s activities best represent where you want them to be. You’ll get the answer quickly to the question - How well am I living by my guiding principles right now?

How to Write a Personal Mission Statement
While the mission statement does not define your vision or goals, it provides a huge amount of direction in developing these. As you can see in mine written above, my mission is to empower a global community in having a more balanced life. I don’t go into how (goals/actions), or what that specifically looks like (vision), but it is very clear that this is something that is important to me and will be a component that crafts my vision. Similarly, the values of compassion, respect, dedication, consideration and love are all traits I deeply care for and they guide me in the way I act. They do not however set my goals.
The personal mission statement is essentially the same in concept as a corporate mission statement. While almost every business has a corporate mission statement, I’ve come across very few people that have developed their own personal mission statement. Its an interesting observation given the power of such a simple act. Similar to a corporate mission statement, your personal statement is a short written proclamation of your core values displayed prominently to help guide you through the difficult decisions and questionable times life may present. Its a ‘note to self’ reminding you of the purpose behind the actions you take in all walks of life. It provides inspiration, motivation and is a barometer to check the alignment of your actions with your values.
Example Mission Statement
My mission is to empower individuals across the globe in living balanced,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], fulfilling, physically and spiritually healthy lives. I myself live my life as an example of these principles. Through compassion, respect, dedication and consideration I pledge to demonstrate my love for and to support my amazing family and the community at large as my life brings meaningful and powerful change on the small and large scale.

Lastly, its fun. You’ll have a blast with this project. I’ve never met anyone that has done this and felt it was a burden and not useful. Quite the opposite, people love doing this and feel its valuable time spent on their own personal growth.
Given that pre-amble, here are some suggestions I have that are worthwhile to consider in writing your personal mission statement:
* The mission statement should be short such that it can be read daily. It should be on the range of 2-4 sentences,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]. If it is any longer you may be touching on many things that are important to you but not the core principles behind them - so dig deeper to find the common thread.
* Set a time limit. Give yourself a maximum of 30 minutes to write it. If it takes longer, you’re probably over thinking it. Write down what you’ve got and choose to come back to it later.
* There is no such thing as perfection. You may not have the words perfect, or the sentence structure exactly as you want it on the first round. Its OK. You do not need to make this a bigger deal than it is. If you realize in a month that you left out a value that is extremely important to you and are uncertain how you missed it, then add it later.
* The mission statement can change with time - you are welcome to update it when/if appropriate. I find that typically our core values do not change too often, but there is a tendency for them to shift when a major life event occurs (ie: having children)
* Begin by brainstorming a series of questions. Whats important to me? What do I love to do,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych]? What makes me shed tears of happiness/joy? What would I like to be remembered for after I pass away?
* The mission statement must be written down and posted in a visible location (this is the most important aspect that all models share)
Closing Thoughts
In many readings, I see all too often a tendency to intermesh the mission statement with a vision statement and personal goals. While no harm is done by doing this, a mission statement written in such a way is not truly a mission statement. There is a tendency for it to lose its value based approach and shift towards ‘doing’ when these are combined. The mission statement is meant to dig deeper into your core self. It asks - What’s really important to you beneath the ‘doing’ and ‘goal setting’? By all means, those are important things to consider,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], but they are not components of a mission statement. I suggest that three separate written documents define your mission,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], vision, and goals.
If I have not written enough at this point to inspire you to take the 15 minutes to write out your mission statement, let me give you a few more reasons to do so.
One set of guidance I’ve enjoyed sharing is to consider what you’d like your gravestone to read and to use this as input into what you should write in your mission statement. You can imagine - "Here lies Doug - He liked tennis, was a wellness/life coach and had 2 children" probably wouldn’t cut it. Yeah, it may tell you a bit about me, but a tombstone should provide a timeless insight into the values that carry my soul into infinity. Such too is the mission statement.

Secondly, writing down your mission statement is an act of raising consciousness. This is a huge step in personal development. By setting a visible reminder of what is most important to us, it becomes engrained in our being, and we begin seeking ways to align our lives even moreso with these values.

It is important to realize that there are many situations that come up in everyday life in which it is appropriate and reasonable to react with some anxiety,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].

Anxiety can be distinguish from fear in several ways. When you are afraid, your fear is usually directed toward some concrete external object or situation. Just as an organization has a mission and a vision for it to be effective so must a group. The mission of the group answers the question, “Why do we exist?” The group’s vision is a mental picture of the future the group seeks to create. So the mission of a monthly information meeting might be “To inform the management staff on the key indicators of the business while recognizing outstanding performance and enlisting their input in a specific action plan for areas that need attention.” Then people go away from the meeting understanding the specifics of what is going right and have helped define how to fix what is not. The vision might be that “At every meeting the group will evaluate whether or not to continue with its existing action items or modify them. Additionally the group will determine what new action needs to occur to improve on (a specific measure.)”
6.) At the beginning of the meeting welcome everyone and if people in the room do not know each other do a round table self-introduction.

The role of the facilitator is key in determining the outcome of a meeting. In working with Melissa and others like her, I established some important guidelines that women and minorities should consider when pursuing angel funding for their businesses. Everyone can benefit from these directives, but based upon my years of experience, I believe that women and minorities often face higher hurdles, and therefore need to be more aware of these issues.
In many sales situations, it is natural to assume the person with the money is in control, but this is a very dangerous assumption. One of my clients, Terry, was seeking to build her own venture capital business but she was too timid to make the pitch and hear the responses. Even though she had the strength and skills to determine the good investments, she could not garner the trust and support of investors for herself. She over-trusted, over-hoped and was overly needy. Her fear of offending or pushing too much sent the wrong message. It is essential that you approach your potential financer with confidence and authority. You know your business and your bottom lines, and if you can convey your confidence in a simple but strong manner, they will recognize you as a leader and someone worth talking to.
Securing angel financing isn't easy for fledgling entrepreneurs. However, it is infinitely more complex for those who aren't like the bulk of the financiers,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], who are overwhelmingly white and male. Women and minorities need to be prepared for that reality even as they tend to company building basics expected of all entrepreneurs. In 1998 I founded two chapters of the Forum for Women Entrepreneurs (FWE) in Southern California. The organization is dedicated to educating and training women entrepreneurs to secure venture capital. The operating premise of the Forum was that securing capital is an educational issue - learn what to do, what to say, what to have in place,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and you will get the money. I think this technical training has made a difference - it appears funding is more level than it was eight years ago,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and members raise more than $350 million each year to build technology and biotech companies. Melissa was one of the members with whom I worked, but unfortunately she did not raise the money she needed to move ahead with her business.
When money is flowing, it’s more likely that natural wariness and discrimination on the part of investors is low. During boom times, women and minorities have the economy on their side. Now is not the time to hold back and worry - your chances of obtaining financing are never better. Don't be afraid to ride the wave! Conversely, when money is tight, be prepared. Melissa had secured a group of individuals -- angels --- who were interested in funding her company. However, they were dragging their feet, carting her all over town to meet this person and that person, and extending the due diligence process to unbearable lengths.
Do not assume that a woman or minority investor group will naturally be the right angel network to approach. All investors have the same bottom line - success; they will seek the best business opportunity and the right match. One woman with whom I worked brought her business idea to an affinity group and did not prepare her presentation in advance. She assumed they would listen to her and she would walk away with funds. Unfortunately, she failed to accomplish her goal because she came across as unprepared and unprofessional. Expect investors to honor your expertise, not your affinity.
Who is on your team and why? It is natural for you (like the investors themselves) to look for people who are like you for your team, but while it's OK to shake things up a little, try not to stand out as an all-women or all-minority team. Just about everyone with whom I have worked has made the serious mistake of assuming their friends and colleagues are naturally the right people to put on the team. However, a team has to represent great strengths and breadth of experience. Exercise your leadership muscles by handpicking the team based on ability, not gender or race. As you know by now,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], discrimination is an unfortunate fact of life. Don't let it overtly color your own business plan!
Her technology didn't have a clear value proposition and therefore it was difficult for the angels to determine whether it was worth funding. The angels were simply slow to make decisions. Melissa is a young,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], attractive Middle Eastern woman, and the financiers, who were all white and male, weren't sure how to handle her.
The truth is, it's hard to tell in these situations exactly what is going on. I've worked in the field of sociology for 20 years, though, and have consulted women and minorities on workplace issues throughout my career, most recently through my own business, Confidence Connections, which I founded in 2002. I have come to believe that although angel investors and venture capitalists will tell you they would invest in anyone with the right business, I have noted that most people operate on the unconscious level and are most comfortable with those who look and think as they do.
Take advantage of good times.
Look at potential investors' portfolios, their closest advisors and business contacts, and their general history. You are looking for small signs that indicate the investor will be interested in your technology and open to it regardless of your race or gender. The right match pays dividends once you secure funding as well. I worked with one woman who had a fabulous medical technology business. It was up and running and she was ready to move on to the next level. Once she accepted a check from her investors, they replaced her with their own handpicked CEO. Unfortunately,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], the investors and the new CEO did not really understand her company, and it was quickly in trouble. Luckily, instead of standing by and letting the investors kill her company, she sought out the right angel to bail her out and guide her to success. She reestablished control over the company, paid off the investors, and thrived.

Ann finally made the decision to face reality. She continued to do a lot of self-talk. She had to remind herself that he was an abusive man. Today, she is free.
Often, women who stay in violent relationships undergo gradual steps of reasoning to reconcile the violence in their minds. The reasons she stays often change as the violence changes forms.

What are the seven secrets on How to Stay Out Once You Get Out?
Having talked to hundreds of women for the research of my books and seminars on Domestic Violence, I have learned from them how to stop the revolving door of abuse. Although, every survivor's story is unique, there are often common threads that provide opportunities for learning. In the following paragraphs,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], three women share their stories: Ann, Margaret,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], and Teri. They confirm that domestic violence can happen to anyone and that there is a way out!
Teri is African-American and she, too, experienced domestic violence as a child. Twenty-nine years old, Teri was just fourteen and in junior high school when she began the six year relationship with her then 19 year old abuser. Teri described how each disagreement with her partner would end with her apology regardless of the issue. She described how her partner used the children, which is so typical of abusive relationships. When Teri tried to leave, he trapped her financially. She could not have the checkbook or credit cards. Cash was sparse. Indeed, she was financially dependent on her husband. She knew she would face severe economic hardship if she chose to support herself and her children on her own. For a time, it seemed worth it to put up with the abuse in order to gain economic security. Economic conditions today afford a woman with children few viable options. She often has no marketable skills. Government assistance is very limited and many dread welfare. She began to save a little money each week and hide it in a place that only she knew about. She opened her own bank account where statements would be mailed to a safe place. She found and made copies of her children's birth certificates, car title, insurance information and forms, social security cards, house deed, mortgage papers, marriage and drivers' license, bank account numbers, savings passbooks and credit cards/bank ATM cards. She also created a financial action plan, the third secret for staying out. This plan helped her determine exactly how much money she and her children needed to live. Teri's impetus for leaving was her children. She knew it couldn't be healthy for her two little ones to see her partner's rage. She wasn't sure how she'd make it. She escaped to a shelter where they still talk about how she bought a car for ten dollars. It actually ran for an entire year. She now has a responsible job. She is a focused parent and a wise woman. Teri, who dropped out of high school to set up housekeeping with her abuser, has now completed her high school requirements and is enrolled in college.
Often, she will be so confused by the years of chaos and uncertainty that she loses touch with the characteristics of a healthy relationship. In a healthy relationship:
· You feel respected as a person.
· Your physical and emotional needs are met.
· You like the other person and you feel liked by them.
· You are appreciated and not taken for granted,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
· You are not afraid to be yourself.
· You can communicate effectively with your partner.
· You can affirm and support one another.
· Trust is everywhere.
· There is a sense of humor and play.
· Responsibilities are shared.

· You are not constantly fighting for control.
· You or your partner admit and seek help for your problems,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych].
· You want to spend time together.
· Love is a verb, not a noun.
· You are growing and the relationship is growing.
· You feel good about yourself and feel free to be yourself.
And Maya Angelou reminds us that there can be victory in her I Still Rise:
Nobel prize winner, Anatole France, says it well in his quote on Recovery:
"All changes, even the most longed for,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], have their melancholy; for what we leave behind us is part of ourselves; we must die to one life before we can enter into another!"
As a woman frees herself from the abusive environment, she can take steps to enhance her self-esteem and to improve the quality of her life. The fifth secret to staying out is to learn to love yourself. She travels through life with one constant companion and that is her "self." How sad if she allows her closest companion to be someone she doesn't even know. This self-inventory can help her discover who she is.
Please answer the following questions:
1. What do I like about myself?
2. What do I like best/least about myself?
3. How do I feel about my body?
4. How do I like to spend my leisure time?
5. What kinds of people do I prefer to be around?
6. What are the qualities I value most about another person?
7 What are the qualities I value least?
8. What kind of work is most fulfilling for me?
The fourth secret on how to stay out is to put the children first. How are children impacted by domestic violence? Children from violent homes may exhibit the following symptoms. They don't trust adults. They may experience anxiety attacks coming from the fear for themselves and their mother. Often, they will have nightmares and/or sleep disturbances. They will learn to be people pleasers, especially preoccupied with pleasing the abusive parent. They will have profound insecurity, which manifests in crippling low self-esteem. At a young age, they will have stress-related physical illnesses. There will be poor school performance even though they are often very bright. And what's even worse is that there is a high likelihood that they will become abusers themselves.
You may shoot me with your words.
You may cut me with your eyes.
You may kill me with your hatefulness
But still, like air, I'll rise.
Even after she has achieved financial independence, her self-esteem is intact, she's put the children first and she's stayed completely away from her abuser... there will still be times when she misses the rare, good moments with him. Often, it is only a temporary urge, but this is when she has to be the most careful. This is also when she needs the greatest support. It is very much like the emotional recovery of an alcoholic. She can't just have one drink or she may start the roller coaster all over again. Many mistakenly think that once she leaves the relationship, she just needs to close the door and start over. The sixth secret to staying out is learning how to toughen up for the long haul. There are many people and organizations ready to help.

Vicky was a 28 year-old mother of three boys. She stayed in the abusive relationship for her children. She has been married for nine years to a man who beat her. Vicky grew up in a very religious family and was a religious woman. Although her family did not like the way her husband treated her, they felt she had a responsibility to keep the family together. One night, Vicky and her children ended up at a shelter for battered women. She was battered and confused. She used her time at the shelter to get some support and explore her options. She only had a high school education and no job experience. She had no source of income. She wanted to return to school and get a job, but her husband didn't want her to work. She had no daycare. In the shelter, Vicky struggled to make the right decision for herself and her children. She wanted to do what was best, and she measured that by the approval she got from others. Eventually, she felt she had to return to her home and family. Her parents were proud of her decision to fulfill her responsibility. Vicky expressed her appreciation for the safe harbor. The battery continued. Although her husband frequently left marks where nobody else could see, he would also beat her about the head. He said he was trying to pound some sense into her. Vicky went to see her minister. He suggested she explore ways to make her husband happier. He explained that marriage can be stressful, and that God rewards those who forgive others. He praised her for being a good wife and a fine mother by keeping the family together. When Vicky started having headaches, she went to see the family doctor. She told him that her husband beat her repeatedly in the head. The doctor said the headaches were stress related. She returned home. The headaches continued. The night before Vicky died in the hospital, she questioned her decision. She said she believed her husband was a good man and never meant to hurt her or the kids. Yet, she said, she prayed the children could stay with her parents after she died because she couldn't trust him to give them a safe environment. That night everyone thought Vicky would be okay. But Vicky knew then, as she had known all along, that there was no way out for her. On her death certificate, it said Vicky died of a cerebral hemorrhage. Putting the children first does not mean allowing your perpetrator to kill you! How many children grow up without the loving bond of their mother in the name of "keeping the family together!" Children who come from violent homes need a safe environment. They need someone to talk to with whom they can share their feelings. They need to know that they are not alone. They need to learn non-violent ways of expressing their feelings and to have non-violent role models. They need to have contact with healthy men and to learn how to value their mothers while she learns to value herself. And lastly, children need to realize that they deserve to have these basic needs met.
Christie Brinkley is still haunted by terrible memories. In September 1999, she opened up in Redbook about her newfound joy and lingering pain. She had been married to a mentally abusive man. It was the only time in her life that she had ever been isolated from her parents. She found herself in the familiar trap of trying to see the "good" part of her husband. Finally,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she couldn't take it any more. She left when she was seven months pregnant. She said everything was screaming for her to get out of there. She remembers how everything seemed like a challenge. She felt paralyzed and embarrassed. Finally she said to herself, "If you realize in your heart that something is not good for you and your family, throw away any thoughts about what anybody else might be thinking." A lot has changed for Christie since those terrifying days. She found a supportive woman who helped her understand what had happened. She also says the key to a good marriage is picking the right husband. Her past did not make her bitter. She allowed her heart to stay open and in walked Peter. She now has a husband who loves her and her family. She's often wondered what would have happened had she not made some difficult decisions. Oprah and Christie teach us that there is life after abuse. The seventh secret to staying out is to focus on hope and healing. Healing is a lifetime process.
When the sixth secret: toughen up for the long haul is brought to light it increases our national awareness to the significance of "family terror." There will always be memories of national and individual tragedies, but with time and support, the memories will heal.
Finally, she stays because:
· Fear... he has become tremendously powerful in her eyes.
· Her self-esteem is gone.
· He's told her and she believes him that no one will love her like he does.
· He threatens to kill her or the children.
· She doesn't know how to survive without him.
· She is very confused and even feels guilty.
· She is having a hard time making decisions because she is depressed and immobile.
· She no longer feels any control over her life.
· She feels hopeless and helpless.
· She's lost sight of any of her options.
· She has any number of physical symptoms/ illnesses and emotional problems.
· She is suicidal.
Meet Maggie. Maggie was living in a beautiful historic home in Indiana. She knew she needed to leave the memories, but she felt stuck. She was so emotionally drained from the abuse that she had left, that she couldn't imagine packing up a 4000 square foot home. A new friend from the East Coast offered her a couple of rooms in her home if she could break away. One morning she woke up and knew that it was time to sell her house and begin a new life. She moved to New York, lived in two rooms and was never happier even though there were a lot of challenges. She had to begin her career over,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], make new friends, find a bank, and doctor. But she felt free. As time passed, a lot of the memories disappeared. It was hard for her to explain to people why she was now living in New York. Most people don't understand abuse unless they've been through it or know someone who has.
Margaret, now 35, had completed high school and some college when she began her 6-year marriage to the man who abused her. Margaret has childhood memories of domestic violence. She was also told that she would be "nothing" without her partner. Margaret's husband would claim, for example,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], that the children "were not his" or tell the children "mommy was going to Hell." The entire atmosphere became so bad for one of Margaret's children that the child ran away from home. Margaret's partner did not allow the house to look as if kids lived in it. The children were not allowed to leave any fingerprints on a glass coffee table. She felt like she was always walking on eggshells. Margaret wanted to believe that every thing would be "okay." She could feel her health deteriorating. She had been healthy when she had married, but now she had a series of bowel and bladder problems. He continued to tell her that she couldn't make it without him and she began to believe him. She developed additional health problems as a result of her husband's philandering. The vicious cycle continued until one day she woke up saying, "I have a chance for a life if I leave him. I have no chance for a life if I stay." She repeated this mantra over and over again. Finally, Margaret left the relationship only to go back three times for the children's sake. The third time was the charm and she has never returned. She learned the second secret of staying out: "Cut off contact." Her husband was creative in inventing ways to see her and talk with her. It would get her emotionally reconnected and she would begin to second-guess herself. She realized that there was a hook every time she saw or talked with him. Intellectually,[link widoczny dla zalogowanych], she knew that the hook had to be broken. She told herself that "no matter what," she could no longer hear his voice or be in his presence. She learned the power of the 'no contact rule." It broke the habit of the revolving door of abuse. Today, she can see her ex-husband without feeling the bond.
When a person has self-esteem, they learn to be responsible. They take care of themselves by not ignoring their own needs. They stop flitting from relationship to relationship looking for someone else to tell them who they are. They begin to listen to their heart and trust their inner wisdom. They are true to themselves, even if it means losing the approval of others and risking rejection. They stop letting other people and events determine the direction of their lives. Recognize that when the victim of abuse realizes that she was not loved, only controlled, she grieves the lack of love because she knows that she is lovable. Through this process, she regains her self-esteem. She knows that she is worthy of love and respect. As she frees herself from the abusive environment, she can take many steps to enhance her self-esteem and to improve the quality of her life.
